Split PDF

Splitting is the everyday PDF job nobody has software for: one chapter out of a 200-page manual, a single invoice out of a monthly statement, the last two pages of a contract for the person who only needs to sign those, or a 40-page scan cut into files small enough for an upload form.

Drag & drop a file here, or .

Everything is processed in your browser - nothing is uploaded.

One PDF up to 25 MB. It is read in this browser tab and never uploaded.

The first two options use the page list below; the third uses the chunk size.

Ranges separated by commas. 2- means page 2 to the end.

Leave blank to reuse the name of the file you drop in.

Only used for the plan below, before a file is chosen. The real job uses the document itself.

Results update as you type. Nothing leaves your device.

    Plan for a 10-page PDF

    1 file

Output files are named after the PDF you add and download straight to your device.

    Output files
    1
    Pages in outputs
    3
    Pages left out
    7
    Largest output
    3 pages

    Files this plan would create

    Output filePages takenPage count
    your-file-extract.pdf1-33
    1 files3

Pages are copied in the order listed, so a range like 3-5 keeps 3, 4, 5 in that order.

The page count above is a preview so the plan can be shown before you pick a file. When you drop a PDF in, the same plan is recalculated from that document and the download buttons appear.

This splitter runs entirely in the browser tab. You choose the pages, the pages are copied into new documents on your own device, and every output arrives as a download. Nothing is uploaded, so a statement, a payslip or a medical record never leaves the laptop it is already on.

    How this split pdf works

Three ways to split, and which one to use

A separate file for each range is the option for chapters, sections or anything where the document is already divided in your head: type 1-3, 4-6, 7-10 and you get three files, each holding those pages in that order.

One file holding every page you list is the option for gathering: type 2, 5, 9 to build a three-page excerpt, or 1-4, 12 to keep a cover and an appendix and drop everything between them. The pages arrive in the order you type them, which is how you can reorder as you extract.

Splitting every N pages is the option for machinery: a 120-page scan cut every 10 pages gives twelve files of ten pages, numbered part-01 to part-12 in the file names so they sort correctly in a folder or an upload dialog.

How the page list is read

Pages are numbered from 1, and the list accepts ranges, single pages and words: 1-3, 5, 8- means pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the end. Odd and even select every other page, which is what you want when a scan put two sides of a sheet on one page and you need to separate them. A reversed range such as 4-2 is read as 2-4 rather than rejected.

Anything past the last page is trimmed instead of failing: a range of 8-20 in a 12-page document becomes 8-12 and the page reports that it did so. Duplicate page numbers are collapsed within one output but allowed across outputs, so the same page can appear in two files on purpose.

Pages are counted from the actual document, not from the number you typed in the preview field. The preview is there so the plan can be drawn before you pick a file, and it is replaced by the real page count the moment a PDF is dropped in.

What the output keeps, and why there is a file cap

Pages are copied as they are, so the extracted file keeps its text, its images at full resolution, its page size and orientation, and its searchability. Nothing is re-rendered and nothing is recompressed.

Document-level features do not follow the pages: a chapter lifted out of a book does not bring the bookmarks with it, and a form field extracted into a new file arrives as page content rather than as a working field. Signature fields behave the same way.

The cap of 20 output files per job exists because every output is held in the tab memory until you download it. Twenty files is generous for chapters and statements; if a scan needs to be cut into more pieces than that, split it in two passes, which also keeps each download small enough to check.

    Worked examples

Each example below was run through the calculator on this page when the site was built, so the numbers match what you see when you enter the same inputs.

A 10-page report split into three chapters

Three files arrive: report-part-01.pdf with pages 1-3, report-part-02.pdf with pages 4-6 and report-part-03.pdf with pages 7-10. Every page of the original is in exactly one output.

Three pages pulled out of a 12-page document

    3 pages

One file, excerpt-extract.pdf, holding pages 2, 5 and 9 in that order. This is the route for keeping a cover page and a summary while dropping the middle, and the other nine pages are simply left out.

    Frequently asked questions

Is this PDF splitter free, with no account and no watermark?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no email step, no daily limit and nothing added to the output. The work happens in your browser, so there is no server to pay for. The only limits are technical: one PDF per job up to 25 MB, and at most 20 output files, because every output is held in the tab memory until you download it.

    Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read through the browser file API, the pages are copied in memory on your device, and the downloads are Blob URLs that exist only in the tab. You can verify it by opening your browser developer tools, watching the network panel while you split, or by disconnecting from the internet and splitting a file anyway.

What page numbers and ranges can I type?

Pages count from 1 and the list takes single pages, ranges, and open-ended ranges: 1-3, 5, 8- means pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the last page. The words odd and even select every other page, the word all keeps every page, and a reversed range like 4-2 is read as 2-4. Ranges past the final page are trimmed to the last page and the result says so, and a range that matches nothing is reported instead of producing an empty file.

Does splitting damage the pages or change their quality?

No. Pages are copied from one document into another rather than re-rendered, so text stays selectable, images keep their original resolution, and page size and orientation are kept per page. A file split into two parts usually adds up to roughly the size of the original, plus a small amount of duplicated structure.

Why did bookmarks, form fields or signatures not come with the pages?

Those features live once per document rather than on a page, so they cannot be copied page by page. An extracted chapter arrives without the book bookmarks, and a form field arrives as printed content instead of a fillable box. Fill the fields in the part you are sending after the split, not before.

Why is the job capped at 20 output files?

Because every output is held in the browser tab until you download it, and a 300-file run would hold the whole document in memory 300 times over. Splitting a scan every page for 300 pages is better done in ranges of 20, or with desktop software that writes files to disk as it goes.

    Assumptions and sources

    • Processing: pdf-lib (MIT licensed) runs in your browser. Selected pages are copied object by object, so text stays selectable and nothing is re-rendered or recompressed.
    • Limits: one PDF per job, 25 MB maximum, at most 20 output files, all held in the browser tab while the job runs.
    • Page-list rules: one-based numbering, ranges, odd and even, duplicates collapsed within an output, reversed ranges normalised, and ranges past the end trimmed with a note.
    • Not preserved: outlines, form fields, signature fields and structure tags, because they sit in the document catalogue rather than on the pages.
    • Privacy: no file, file name or page content is sent to danfio.com. There is no upload endpoint behind this tool.
