Paycheck Calculator

Gross salary is the number on the offer letter; take-home pay is the number that reaches your account. Between the two sit federal income tax, Social Security and Medicare, state and local tax, and anything you choose to put into retirement or a health savings account before tax.

$

Percent of gross pay. Pre-tax, so it reduces income tax and FICA.

$

HSA, medical, dental and vision premiums (Section 125 items).

Flat estimate of your state rate; use 0 in states with no income tax.

$

Roth 401(k), garnishments, union dues — taken out after tax.

$

From Form W-4 step 4(c) if you ask for extra to be withheld.

  • Federal income tax$5,020.00
  • Social Security$3,720.00
  • Medicare$870.00
  • Take-home pay$50,390.00

Pre-tax deductions leave gross before tax, which is why a 401(k) contribution costs less than the amount you put in.

Only the income inside each band is taxed at that rate; the rest of the salary is never taxed at your top rate.

On $60,000 of gross pay the federal government takes $5,020.00 of income tax and $4,590.00 of FICA — an average rate of 16% across the whole salary. The next dollar you earn is taxed at 12% federally.

This calculator uses the 2026 federal brackets and the 2026 Social Security wage base, applies your pre-tax deductions first, and reports the result per paycheck and per year.

How this paycheck calculator works

The order of the deductions

Pre-tax deductions come off first. A traditional 401(k) contribution and Section 125 benefits such as health, dental and HSA contributions reduce both income tax and FICA, which is why they are the cheapest dollars you can save.

Taxable income is then gross pay minus pre-tax deductions minus the standard deduction. Federal income tax is calculated bracket by bracket on what remains: only the income inside each band is taxed at that band’s rate.

FICA: the flat part of the bill

Social Security takes 6.2% of wages up to $184,500 in 2026, and Medicare takes 1.45% of everything with no cap. Wages above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (married filing jointly) also attract the 0.9% Additional Medicare tax.

Because FICA applies from the first dollar, it is the reason a low-income paycheck still has tax taken out of it even when the income tax is zero.

Why your actual paycheck will differ

Employers withhold using the IRS percentage-method tables in Publication 15-T, which apply the standard deduction and bracket rates to each pay period rather than to an annualised figure. Bonuses, overtime, mid-year raises and the assumptions on your Form W-4 all shift the result.

State tax is a flat rate you supply here. Real state systems are progressive with their own deductions and credits, and a few states and cities levy no income tax at all, so treat the state line as an order-of-magnitude estimate.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my first paycheck smaller than the next one?

Employers often apply the full-year brackets to a single pay period until your cumulative wage records catch up, and some payroll systems also settle health premiums or benefits at the start of the year. Once a few pay periods share the same annualised rate, the paycheck stabilises.

Do 401(k) contributions reduce FICA?

Traditional 401(k) and Section 125 contributions reduce both income tax and FICA, because they are excluded from federal wages entirely. Roth contributions do not: they are taken after tax, so they do not lower any tax bill.

What is the difference between marginal and effective tax rate?

The marginal rate applies to your next dollar of income and depends on the bracket it falls into. The effective rate is total tax divided by total income. A single filer earning $60,000 is in the 12% bracket but pays about 8% of gross in federal income tax.

Does overtime get taxed at a higher rate?

No. Overtime is taxed as ordinary income, but a larger paycheck can cross into a higher bracket, so more of it is withheld. Any excess above the actual annual liability is refunded when you file.

How do bonus payments get taxed?

Employers normally withhold 22% on supplemental wages under $1 million, in addition to FICA. That flat rate is often higher or lower than the tax you ultimately owe on the bonus, so the difference shows up at filing.

How accurate is this paycheck calculator?

It matches an annualised calculation of the 2026 brackets, the standard deduction and FICA rates. Employer withholding tables, credits such as the Child Tax Credit, and progressive state systems will move the number, so treat it as a close estimate rather than a payroll figure.

What is the Social Security wage base?

The maximum wage subject to Social Security tax: $184,500 in 2026. Wages above it still pay Medicare tax, but no longer the 6.2% Social Security tax.

Assumptions and sources

  • Federal income tax brackets and the standard deduction: IRS Revenue Procedure 2025-32 (tax year 2026).
  • Social Security at 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 for 2026 and Medicare at 1.45% with no cap, plus the 0.9% Additional Medicare tax above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint): IRS Publication 15 (2026) and the IRS withholding-rates tax topic.
  • State and local tax are flat rates supplied by the user; no credits, phase-outs or local exemptions are modelled.
  • The 401(k) contribution is modelled as a percentage of pay and the annual elective deferral limit is not enforced, so a very high contribution percentage may overstate the deduction.
